Need to apply for legal aid in Edmonton? Head to the Courthouse!

Starting October 21, 2019, all in-person applications for legal aid coverage in Edmonton will be accepted only at the Edmonton Law Courts at 1a Sir Winston Churchill Square. Legal Aid Alberta’s (LAA) Edmonton office will no longer accept in-person applications.

This change to intake and reception services in Edmonton will bring us in line with the changes made in Calgary earlier this year, and make it more convenient for Albertans to apply for our services.

Our courthouse offices in Edmonton are located on the 2nd and 4th floor and will be open Monday to Friday from 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. to take applications for all areas of law where LAA offers services.

As well, reception in the Edmonton Provincial Office will be centralized on the 3rd floor where some services, such as accepting client payments, will remain for existing clients and by appointment only.

This change will make the application process more convenient for our clients. Many clients already have to go to the courthouse and this way Legal Aid Alberta is able to serve them there, eliminating the extra time it takes to call in or visit an office to apply. We made this change back in June in Calgary and had great feedback from the change.

“It is our duty as an organization to provide client-focused programs and services that protect the most vulnerable in Alberta,” said Julia Sproule, Associate Vice-President, Operations.  “With this change, Albertans will be able to access our vital services through innovative intake processes that better match their needs.”

While we do offer in-person applications, we encourage all clients to apply by phone as that is generally easier and more convenient. Our toll-free number (1-866-845-3425) will not change and we are available by phone Monday to Friday from 8:15 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.

It has been a pleasure serving you at our Edmonton office. We look forward to seeing you at the Edmonton Law Courts!
