Congratulations are in order for Legal Aid Alberta (LAA) Lawyer Desiree Tan for being recognized as a Filipino Champion of the Year. Tan received the award from the Filipino Champions of Canada (TFCC) on June 14, 2019, as part of the celebration of Filipino Heritage Month in Canada.
Tan is a Senior Lawyer and Team Lead focusing on youth criminal law with LAA in Calgary, and has been with LAA since 2013.
TFCC recognizes the importance of Filipino-Canadian professionals and their contribution to Canada, and aims to celebrate these individuals by recognizing their hard work, accomplishments, and dedication to their respective careers. Along with Tan, 11 other Outstanding Filipino-Canadians from across the country were selected to be given this honorable recognition, including business leaders, educators, and entrepreneurs.
“It is important to me to be recognized by the Filipino community, being someone born in Canada who grew up in both the Canadian and Filipino cultures,” says Tan. “Strong work ethic and resiliency were ingrained in me at a very early age; common traits you see within the Filipino culture. My background has helped shape me into the lawyer and woman that I am today.”
Legal Aid Alberta thanks Tan for her dedication to helping young Albertans navigate the legal system, and understand and protect their legal rights.
