EDMONTON, ALBERTA (May 5, 2017) – Legal Aid Alberta announced today that its Board of Directors has unanimously chosen Gianpaolo (John) Panusa to be the organization’s next President and Chief Executive Officer effective June 1, 2017.
“An accomplished leader, John Panusa manages to inspire while also ensuring organizations deliver results in the short term and long term,” says Robert Calvert, Q.C., Chair of the Legal Aid Alberta Board of Directors. “The Board was committed to finding an executive who not only brought extensive legal and leadership experience, but who also had a passion for justice and fairness. After conducting an exhaustive search process, the Board concluded that John brings a unique skill set to the organization and is ideally suited to lead our employees as we continue improving client service while building strong relationships with our numerous stakeholders.”
John Panusa comes to Legal Aid Alberta from WorkSafeBC where he currently serves as Associate General Counsel. Mr. Panusa attended high school in Alberta and obtained an undergraduate law degree from the University of Alberta. He articled in Alberta and went on to achieve a Masters of Law Degree from Cambridge University. Along with experience in private legal practice, John brings with him 16 years of legal, governance and management experience.

The Board also wishes to express its gratitude to Maria David-Evans, the outgoing Interim President and CEO. “We are grateful to Maria for her strong, effective and caring leadership,” says Mr. Calvert. “She has made a significant contribution in her time with Legal Aid Alberta, and on behalf of our entire organization we would like to wish Maria all the best in her retirement.”
